Methven Walkway

An easy walkway mainly following grass verges beside private farmland and the Rangitata Diversion Race, a dual purpose irrigation and hydro-electric channel carrying water from the Rangitata River to the Highbank Power Station on the south bank of the Rakaia River. The Walkway, commencing and finishing at the Methven i-SITE Visitor Centre, is intersected by various country roads allowing several walking options around the outskirts of Methven, and there is an additional option to head to the Ashburton River.

About the walk:

The most popular walkway route is indicated on the above map which departs at the Methven i-SITE Visitor Centre and heads along Chertsey Road, Cemetery, A&P Showgrounds, Barkers Road, Holmes Road, Racecourse, Rangitata Diversion Race Canal to Pudding Hill Road, Hobbs Road, South Belt, and Main Street back to the Methven i-SITE Visitor Centre.

At the Pudding Hill Road intersection you can add an extension to the walkway route by continuing to follow the Rangitata Diversion Race to the Ashburton River and return, adding another 3 hours to your walk.

Shorter routes can be achieved by turning left at the end of Holmes Road and heading back into Methven via the Main Street (reduces walking route to a one hour circuit), or turning off at the Mt Harding Road intersection and heading back to Methven via Forest Drive which reduces the walking route to a 2 hour circuit.

A quicker route out to the Ashburton River from the centre of Methven would be to walk along South Belt, Hobbs Road, Pudding Hill Road, Rangitata Diversion Race to Ashburton River and return (approx 4 hours return).

Note: Bikes are allowed on the Methven Walkway, please ensure that you watch out for walkers. There are a couple of fences that you will need to lift your bike over.
